"It is important to let go to our tendency to argue and theorize about everything. Simply walk the path and try your best to be in oneness with the way of the buddhas".

"When I lie on Kumiko's tatami, before anything takes place I have a sense of the space. There is a sacredness to it. I can feel it is a place of learning. I feel safe in it. It is clean, welcoming, and pleasant. It is a place for learning, there is a small altar, it is silent, I feel the energy already. I experience after yoga practice or pranayama meditation, but different because in that I was an active agent. I cannot understand it intellectually, I can feel that it has a profound effect on my body and psyche and it makes me feel good."

"I have known Kumiko since I have started learning Shiatsu which goes back to 1998. Her knowledge and sincerity of Shiatsu has always made a huge impression on me. Learning the art of Shiatsu is challenging but Kumiko knows to teach and demonstrate it in a way that makes it connect. I have followed Kumilo throughout the years, she is an asset to the philosophy of Shiatsu."
- Aliza Rosen, Senior Shiatsu Therapist
"It is such a wonderful opportunity to give and receive Shiatsu under Kumiko's supervision, improve my technique and revise what I had learned during the Shiatsu courses taken in the past. We have an amazingly dedicated and supportive students' community that I love. I am looking forward to the advanced course will be offered in Manhattan on weekends. The Five Lights Center is a perfect location for it as well."
"Kumiko Kanayama has built a supportive space at her Five Lights Center that offers us the opportunity to continue learning Shiatsu through the Courses offered and at practice classes. When I first met Kumiko, in the Beginner One Ohashiatsu Course many years ago, I wanted to learn from her and model my movements by her. She carries such a fluid, graceful and happy confidence. It was easy to recognize this immediately her spirit of strong and gentle peace. What I discovered further, over the years of practice classes and private sessions with Kumiko, is her rare compassion that is without judgment, that is patient and that uplifts. She has constancy of peace and focus that settles the receiver of her Shiatsu. Kumiko is also by nature warm and encouraging. She makes you feel completely at ease no matter what stresses or pains you may have. Her hands are powerful and precise; her heart and mind work seamlessly and quietly together as a loving and strong tonic for the client. Kumiko is eager to teach and pass on the Shiatsu that she has integrated so deeply into herself. She brings a love and optimism to her work and to clients, that is precious. She carries wisdom about life and about our bodies that creates a very safe space for physical and emotional healing. She is a champion of renewed health on all levels and most appreciated by me."
- Mara Harnett, student and client of Kumiko

"I always feel that I could breathe better after shiatsu work which results in able to do postures better. In particular case of gall bladder meridian work, my one-legged postures (Dandayamana Janushirasana, Dhanurasana and Padangustasana) was much better as I could stabilize myself better (tight gall bladder sort of causes balance to go outside) ."

"Practicing Shiatsu and Bikram Yoga has shown me that the two disciplines are complementary. Shiatsu helps increase the energy flow in our body and mind, while Bikram Yoga helps strengthen that flow. Shiatsu is much more than just a good way to relax. Through gentle stretches and light pressure, it boosts the immune system and protects the body against illness. Shiatsu has helped me open up in areas that before felt closed. Yoga brings greater balance and harmony into our lives, as well as guiding us towards our higher self. Bikram Yoga has brought much-needed clarity mentally and spiritually. Practicing both has enhanced my life in all aspects of experience: mind, body, and soul."

"Most massage therapists run through a mechanized set of motions, but Kumiko listens to your body and spends time on the points that you need. She is creative, smart, and flexible, so if you tell her that something tickles or feels funny, she will try different approaches to healing that part of your body. She is amazingly sensitive, never goes too hard or too soft. Even people who don't like massages love getting shiatsu from her. She's absolutely the best. There is no other way of saying it.”

“I have worked with Kumiko for over 10 years. During that time she has taught me about the workings of the body and psyche helping me to understand how the different elements affect the body-mind. Her work as a practitioner supports the vicissitudes of the emotional life as well. I am so grateful to what her delicate sensibility as a practitioner has made possible for my understanding of these processes. I highly recommend that anyone who is feeling emotionally depleted work with her with shiatsu as well as those suffering from physical ailments. Her knowledge of this tradition is extensive and the depth of her training is evident.”

“I met Kumiko for several years, during the most challenging years of my life where I was struggling with stage 4 endometriosis that affected my entire body with chronic pain, infertility, my sister got cancer and died, I went through early menopause, and waded through grief, sadness, anxiety, and other emotions. My body felt stuck, heavy, and there was constantly pain and discomfort.
Going to Kumiko made me happier than anything else, and helped me heal more than any physical therapy, medication, or psychotherapy.
She is so kind, caring, funny and knowledgeable and shared useful information when I had questions. Yet, at the same time, she was always able to create a quiet, meditative atmosphere that allowed me to feel safe and sink deeper and connect with myself. In every session I was able to transcend my thoughts and really relax and go to that zone where you're just floating.
Her hands are simply incredible-powerful, precise, grounding. I have never had anyone work on me the way she did. Every session I would experience huge releases and more flow and ease in my body, and I would feel my spirit restored. She expertly knew just how to open up the stuck places in me-places I didn't realize were stuck, both physical and emotional. Sometimes she would incorporate tuning forks and other modalities and I enjoyed those additions as well.
Bottom line, I made going to Kumiko a weekly event-part of my self-care and self-love ritual. Friday afternoons, I was there. I walked out of our sessions feeling positive, light, refreshed, and so grateful.
I moved out of NYC and literally Kumiko's shiatsu is what I miss the most! I can't recommend her work highly enough.
She's a hugely talented healer, a master at what she does, humble, compassionate, down-to-earth and just a pure joy to be around.
If you're wondering whether you should try the five lights center-GO! Give yourself the gift of shiatsu with Kumiko-
You'll be so glad you did. “
